Dr Gruen's often flowery and confusing words just seem to call for bureaucratic inquiries that inevitably cause more paperwork than resolution. Our system is fine (compare it to overseas debacles) but it just needs some plain & simple, firm measures thrown in like the government saying (to banks) "if we guarantee your deposits, we will control your lending interest rates". The gov't also needs to break down the unfair bargaining position of clients that have to agree to hundreds of one sided terms & conditions, just so they can get a loan.

there is absolutely no need whatsover for government to consider establishing a new bank - nor is there really a need for it.
if the "joe six packs" of australia got some good advice and shopped around for better deals - borrowing and investing - they would realise that the existing finance industry in australia is more than capable of providing good, cheap and world class products.

Whilst this may appear to be agood idea at face value, the gov't will have to carefully consider any fallout herefrom eg. like that from Bank guarantee which has effecitvley subjugated 2nd tier & other lenders to the majors. Still it would be good to keep the ________ honest.
